Robert is a life-long resident of the Borough of Middlesex, attended public schools, and graduated from Middlesex High School in June of 1969.

He graduated from Middlesex County College with a degree in Liberal Arts and completed his undergraduate studies at Richard Stockton State College earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology in June of 1973.

He worked with the Piscataway Department of Health and attended Rutgers University Cook College to obtain a Certificate in Environmental Health and Law. He continued with the Piscataway Department of Health as a Licensed Registered Environmental Health Specialist (formerly called a Sanitarian) until March 1975.

He attended New Jersey City University (formerly Jersey City State College) and in June of 1976 was awarded a Master of Arts Degree in Health Administration.

Robert worked for the Plainfield Division of Health as a Licensed Registered Environmental Health Specialist coordinating the Lead Paint Inspection and Remediation Program from June of 1976 through March of 1978. While with the Plainfield Division of Health, he was instrumental in applying for and securing several grants to expand lead inspection services.

In addition to his full time employment with the City of Plainfield, the Fanwood Board of Health hired him in December of 1976 as their part-time Executive Officer. Robert worked with the Board of Health to develop and implement public health and environmental programming for the Borough.

The Westfield Board of Health hired Robert as a Licensed Registered Environmental Health Specialist in April of 1978. At that time the Westfield Regional Health Department provided public health and environmental services to the Boroughs of Fanwood, Garwood and Mountainside, administering services to over 49,000 residents.

In January of 1981, he was appointed as the Director of Health / Licensed Health Officer with the Westfield Board of Health. The Department expanded over the years eventually providing public health and environmental health services to the Boroughs of Fanwood, Garwood, Mountainside, New Providence, Roselle Park, the Township of Springfield, the City of Summit and the Town of Westfield serving over 108,000 residents.

During his tenure with the Westfield Regional Health Department, Robert obtained several grants from the NJ Department of Health providing Occupational Health Services and Asbestos Inspection services throughout Union County.

Robert is a current member and Past President of the NJ State Health Officers Association, and was Past President of the NJ Public Health Administrators Association.

He is also a current member and Past President of the Union County Health Officers Association, former Chairman of the Union County Regional Environmental Health Commission, and former Chairman of the Union County Governance and Public Health Partnership Committee. He also served as a member of the Union County Freeholder Advisory Board Weapons of Mass Destruction Advisory Board.

Robert retired from his position as Director of Public Health / Licensed Health Officer in December of 2008.

Robert served as a Councilman in the Borough of Middlesex from January 1978 to December of 1980.

In 1979, he ran unsuccessfully for the New Jersey State Assembly as the Republican candidate for the 17th legislative district.

Robert served for three years (4/1992-4/1995) on the Middlesex Board of Education. He was Chairman of the Finance Committee and a member of the Negotiations Committee.

Robert was a member of the UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School Advisory Board, and former member and Past Chairman of the UMDNJ-Community Mental Health Center Advisory Board.

He received the Middlesex Borough Mayor's Award for Outstanding Citizen of the Year in 1986 and again in 2005.

He was a member of the Middlesex Borough Planning Board from January 2009 thru November 9th, 2009.

Robert was elected as Mayor of the Borough of Middlesex on November 3rd, 2009 and sworn in on November 10th, 2009 for an unexpired term ending on December 31st, 2011.

Robert is married to Amelia (Contestable) who was also raised in Middlesex. Amelia retired as a Research Nurse Clinician in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School after 33 years with UMDNJ. She is presently employed at the Steeplechase Cancer Center at Somerset Medical Center as an Oncology Research Nurse. She is a former Vice President / member of the Middlesex Board of Health and former member of the Middlebrook Regional Health Commission.

Their daughter Jennifer Sherr, MD, PHD is a Clinical Instructor at Yale School of Medicine (Pediatrics Endocrinology Department) is married to Richard Coscia a Senior IT Manager with Elizabeth Arden Corporate, they reside in Monroe, CT.

Their daughter Allison Drecksage is a Senior Product Manager Li & Fung USA / JIMLAR Corporate Division in Manhattan, NY and is married to Corey Drecksage who is a Licensed Electrician. They live in Metuchen, NJ.

Their son Robert is a Plumber with Local Plumbers Union #24 West Caldwell, New Jersey. He lives in Middlesex and serves as a member of the Middlesex Borough Planning Board.
